The Sudanese Kitchen wins the Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards 2026

We are delighted to share that The Sudanese Kitchen by Omer Al Tijani has won the award for Best Debut Cookbook at the prestigious Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards 2026 — one of the UK’s most respected recognitions of excellence in food writing and publishing.

Now in its 14th year, the awards celebrate the very best voices shaping how we understand food, culture and storytelling today, highlighting work that reflects diverse culinary traditions and perspectives.

The Sudanese Kitchen, published by Almas Art Foundation, has been recognised in the Debut Cookery Book category, placing it among an outstanding group of international titles. This win marks a significant moment not only for the book, but for Sudanese culinary culture more broadly — bringing long-overdue visibility to a rich and deeply rooted food heritage.

More than a cookbook, The Sudanese Kitchen is a cultural document — preserving recipes, traditions and stories that are often underrepresented in global food discourse. Through this recognition, Sudanese cuisine is being placed firmly within an international conversation, celebrating its depth, history and contemporary relevance.

This milestone follows a remarkable year for the publication, further cementing its importance as a vital contribution to both culinary and cultural storytelling.

We are incredibly proud to see The Sudanese Kitchen receive this recognition and to continue championing Sudanese voices on a global stage.
