The Gravediggers Wife - Screening
Courthouse Hotel Cinema
24–28 October 2022
In partnership with Aya Films and Kayd, Almas Art Foundation proudly hosted a week of public screenings of The Gravedigger’s Wife at London’s Courthouse Hotel Cinema from 24–28 October, alongside screenings across the UK. Directed by Khadar Ayderus Ahmed, this poetic and tender film follows a husband’s devotion as he confronts impossible choices to save the woman he loves — a moving exploration of love, resilience, and sacrifice set against the vivid landscapes of Djibouti.
The Gravedigger’s Wife made history as Somalia’s first-ever Oscars entry (2021) and has received international acclaim, winning the Golden Stallion of Yennenga at FESPACO and five awards at the Africa Movie Academy Awards. This special programme was made possible with the support of the BFI, awarding funds from the National Lottery, and reflects Almas Art Foundation’s ongoing commitment to amplifying powerful cinematic voices from Africa and its diaspora.
