Together Together - Gerald Chukwuma

In September 2023, Almas Art Foundation proudly presented a short documentary film and publication celebrating the Lagos-based artist Gerald Chukwuma. The publication, Together Together, offers an in-depth exploration of Chukwuma’s dynamic practice, featuring insightful essays by Professor Ikenga Chuu Krydz Ikwuemesi and acclaimed novelist Chibundu Onuzo. Filmed across the artist’s two Lagos studios, the accompanying documentary provides a rare glimpse into his creative process and philosophy.

Born in Enugu, Nigeria, in 1973, Chukwuma’s work draws on Uli and Nsibidi symbols, transforming reclaimed wood through burning, chiselling, and painting into richly textured assemblages alive with history and meaning. His art embodies both personal and political narratives, reflecting on heritage, community, and environmental consciousness. Through this project, Almas Art Foundation celebrates one of Nigeria’s most distinctive voices and the vitality of Lagos’s contemporary art scene.
