Ubunzululwazi Lwabaphantsi - Andile Dyalvane

Almas Art Foundation proudly presented its first project of 2024, dedicated to the acclaimed Cape Town–based ceramic artist Andile Dyalvane. Rooted in the artist’s deep connection to his Xhosa heritage and the land of his birth in the Eastern Cape, the project comprises a documentary film and a publication that together trace the evolution of Dyalvane’s celebrated practice.

Filmed in September 2023 in collaboration with Head in the Clouds Films, the documentary offers a rare glimpse into Dyalvane’s studio in Cape Town, capturing his creative process and his reflections on ancestry, spirituality, and clay as a conduit for memory. The accompanying publication, Ubunzululwazi Lwabaphantsi (Ancestral Wisdom), features insightful texts by Olivia Barrell and Alexis Dyalvane, providing a comprehensive survey of his artistic journey.

Known internationally for his powerful sculptural works that merge contemporary design with ancestral philosophy, Dyalvane continues to expand the language of ceramics through a profound engagement with community, ritual, and the natural world. This project reflects Almas Art Foundation’s ongoing commitment to documenting and amplifying the practices of leading artists from Africa and its diaspora.
